History

The History of the Black Women's Expo

In 1993, the management of V103, its ambitious promotions team along with a newly formed committee of African American women embarked upon what has now become the nation’s foremost exposition targeting the African America consumer! This interactive, educational and informative exposition for the benefit of the African American community has become an effective marketing tool that enhances the bottom-line of growth-oriented companies. An array of corporations that know the value of marketing to the African American consumer were annual sponsors of the Expo for Today’s Black Woman. That impressive list included corporations like American Airlines, Western Union, State Farm Insurance, Walgreen’s, Sears, Soft Sheen/Carson Products, General Motors and Kraft to name a few.

In Chicago and surrounding communities, the annual Expo is much-anticipated and top-of-mind for the African American community. Each year thousand attended seeking cultural enlightenment, spiritual empowerment and sheer entertainment, thus attendance at this spirit-filled exposition continued to grow and topped all other expositions of its kind!

The Expo boasted an exciting array of activities presented over the three-day weekend. A central element to the exposition was the discussion of important issues particularly relevant to the African American community. Considerable care was taken to develop the roster of seminar topics and panel discussions that were presented during the Expo, as well as, the list of nationally recognized speakers invited to share their knowledge and expertise. Historically, our standing –room only seminars have addressed such issues as racial equality, financial independence, spiritual growth, self sufficiency and empowerment, health & nutrition, the welfare of our children and, much more!

The Expo guaranteed to lift your spirits with some of the best entertainment around showcased daily on our Main Stage! There was show stopping local and national musical entertainment, fashion shows, dance & theatrical performances to view throughout the day! The list of entertainment guests had been incredible….from gospel sensations “Mary Mary” to R&B megastars “Brian McKnight” and “R. Kelly”! The list goes on and on!
